Sandspit

The area known as Sandspit is one of the earliest European settlements north of Auckland. The main industries at that time were kauri logging, shipbuilding, shark fishing, shark rendering and of course, the two hotels.

Sandspit later developed into dairy and beef farming and as a local port for sending produce to Auckland. Today the wharf at the end of the Sandspit provides a convenient loading point for commercial vessels and all the private craft that come and go in the area. It is also the home of the Sandspit Ferry which has a terminal near the end of the wharf. The ferry services Kawau Island regularly and the other islands nearby when necessary.

There is also a great café/restaurant at the terminal end of the Sandspit which is an excellent place to spend time watching the boats and tides going in and out. The closest service centre to Sandspit is the riverside town of Warkworth which is only 7km away which makes Sandspit a very popular choice for people wishing to move out from the city. See  the team at Harveys Warkworth to find out about homes for sale in Sandpit first; Sandpit properties don’t tend to stay on the real estate market for long.

Snells Beach

Driving 9km east on Sandspit Road from the riverside village of Warkworth, through the rolling green countryside, you arrive at the one of the most popular sea side villages in the region, Snells Beach.

Primarily Snells Beach  is a residential area and the first impressions are of wide, spectacular sea views over Kawau Bay to historic and picturesque Kawau Island. A look in either direction takes your gaze to the surrounding islands of Kawau, then to the Hauraki Gulf and beyond.

As the hub of the Mahurangi East Peninsula, there are many options for houses for sale in Snells Beach and other great Snells Beach real estate options. Snells Beach is famous for its beach walks, picnicing, safe swimming, boat launching, fishing and its vibrant shopping centre, hotel and holiday accommodation, numerous eating places and Brick Bay Vineyard with its fantastic sculpture trail.

Algies Bay

A further 3 minutes drive along Mahurangi East Road takes you to another jewel, Algies Bay. Residential Algies Bay is a mixture of permanent residents, weekend home owners and those who like all the advantages of beachside living and a little bit more land to go with it (lifestyle blocks).

Algies Bay is a great place to go picnicing, swimming, to launch the boat and a safe place to teach the children how to sail and enjoy the water. The Sandspit Yacht Club has a new club house on the waters edge where children and their yachts congregate on the weekend.

Algies Bay real estate is popular because living the life by the beach or on the lifestyle blocks at Algies Bay or nearby at Martins Bay and historic Scotts Landing is what makes living on the peninsula so relaxing and enjoyable.

Matakana

This delightful little village is located approximately 10 minutes from Warkworth. Originally the major industry was timber milling but later general farming was the mainstay of life in Matakana. The wharf at the time was frequented by old scows and steamers that carried the produce to and from Auckland, but now it is picnickers and those launching small boats and kayaks that use the wharf most.

Today it is the wine and tourist trade along with the cafes, fantastic movie theatres and restaurants that is the focus of attention at Matakana. Each Saturday the Matakana market in the heart of the village buzzes with the sounds of music and the great number of people simply enjoying the ambiance that gives Matakana its well deserved reputation.

As the gateway to Point Wells, the Takatu Peninsula and Tawharanui Regional Park and Omaha, known for its sandy surf beach, holiday homes and and distinctive Omaha real estate, Matakana has grown rapidly and properties for sale in Matakana are quickly snatched up. See the team at Harveys Warkworth for expert advice on Matakana real estate and Omaha real estate.

Kawau Island

Kawau Island is another place full of New Zealand History.  For Maori it was the fishing grounds and stopover place for those tribes transiting from and to Northland. For the first settlers it was, sheep and the discovery of manganese and copper on the Island that drew them, resulting in the building of the now famous “Mansion House” for the mine manager.

The land around Mansion House and building were later bought by New Zealand’ first Governor General (Sir George Grey) who upgraded the 10 bedroom house for his private use.  He later introduced many exotic plants and animals including zebra, monkey, possum, wallaby and kookaburra.  The zebra and monkey have long since gone and the house and grounds at Mansion House Bay are now administered by the Department of Conservation; it is a great place to visit.

Today Kawau Island, with its multitude of picturesque bays and inlets, is a spectacular place to visit for the day or stay as long as you like: there is no other place like it. Kawau Island real estate opportunities are few and far between but the local team at Harveys Warkworth will always be in the know!

Wellsford

A small town with a big heart, Wellsford can be found to the north of Auckland on State Highway One, 15 minutes north of Warkworth. As it is the northernmost major town settlement in the Rodney region and almost halfway between Auckland and the far north city of Whangarei, Wellsford real estate is becoming increasingly popular.

Wellsford is well known as the regional centre for the extensive town and rural community of around 1,700 and an ever-increasing tourist population heading north who take advantage of the many cafes straddling the main road.

As with most rural towns, sport plays a big part in Wellsford’s day-to-day life with rugby, soccer, netball, cricket, tennis and athletics being amongst the more popular sports played there; if there is a club for anything, Wellsford has it somewhere. The Wellsford Golf Club is also very popular as is squash, rollerskating, archery and indoor and outdoor bowling.

Living in Wellsford is all about the lifestyle and if that is what you are looking for then Wellsford has lots of it. Talk to the team at Harveys Warkworth about houses for sale in Wellsford.
